Opensolaris- What can be expected for 2010.03?


Sun Microsystems were taken over in January 2010 by Orcale.Since then there has been a period of silent activity concerning changes in the product strategies or future development of Opensolaris.Many of the features are thought to be proof of concept builds for the forthcomming Solaris 11.It is still early days as to what Strategy Orcale will annouce for Opensolaris however the next scheduled realease is due sometime around 2010.03

What kind of changes can be expected? We looked at a prelaunch development edition to see whats likely to be a big milestone annoucement for Opensolaris. In addition to a changes in the graphics interface,the main applications will be updated releases of Firefox,Thunderbird,Openoffice with many additions to the ever impressive repository and many bug fixes.

We took the chance to test drive one of the latest development releases to see what a home desktop user might expect.This is my own desktop build based on B130/2 which we recognise as work in progress.

The distribution which is due around the end of March 2010 and is available as a live DVD or free download.This is more likely to reflect the potential of the system for enterprise and desktop OS adopters.However the real gains are aimed at the enterprise level with support for sparc and a range of new processors.There are still some bugs which remain less appealing such as no out of the box Adobe flash browser support, bluetooth/UWB stack and wireless mobile dongles for laptop users.However this release is demonstrating real presents in the enterprise space.Why has the three play strategy endourced by industry analysts Bsc Consulting UK has taken so long to annouce?

OpenSolaris 2010.02 Unwrapped !

Sun Microsystems will next month stop shipping solaris Express Community Edition which has been mirroring opensolaris releases.This is planned to be merged into the code base of a new Opensolaris release 2010.02 . The latest test builds include offline IPS (Image Packaging System),a new gnome stack reflecting the release of the new Gnome3 desktop, ZFS enhancements, integration of cloud, and installation improvements for SPARC chip users.Details of other updates and releases have not yet been released but should include new gnome features, firerfox updates,cloud integration, and X.org packages. Openbabel have created two new wallpapers under creative personal license to celebrate the release.
