Opensolaris connectivity to mobile broardband networks

In 2008 Dr Alastair Brydon, Analysts Mason Associate Dr Mark Heath, Analysts Mason Associate published research on 'wireless network traffic 2008-2015'. In essence this research backs independent research published this month of forecasts of unprecedented usage of mobile data services significantly, driven by the rapid take-up of smartphones, such as the 3G iPhone, and of plug-and-play USB (HSPA) modems. Currently Opensolaris does not support hot plugging of mobile phone dongles despite warnings from BSC consulting UK that Opensolaris cannot expect mainstream mobile adoption by major OEM or new adopters without meeting this customer minimum requirement.

Oracle has announced the completion of its take over of Sun by later summer 2009. There is some uncertainty, not of the continued development of the Opensolaris community but the ownership and strategy post Oracle takeover. It is hoped that new leadership of the Opensolaris community will focus on what OS attributes need to be developed as a matter of urgency to increase adoption rates.

It is available in three versions: a live DVD with a graphical installer which installs a full desktop environment; a text installer which is intended for server installations; and a minimal installer which only delivers a minimal set of packages. Each version is available both as a DVD ISO and as a USB image. Please note that the primary mirror is capped so downloads are slower; use regional mirrors instead.  http://dlc-origin.openindiana.org/   Screenshots and wallapers      Downloads, Screenshots, and wallpapers   http://www.openindiana.org https://www.flickr.com/photos/67976888@N06/

Android tethering to Openindiana laptops

One major problem with using Opensolaris was the lack of drivers for mobile 3G modems However with the development of tethering on Android (Froyo 2.2 and above) Openindiana can now been used very easily with laptops on the 3G/4G networks. In Android go to settings, wireless networks, check the boxes marked tethering and mobile networks. This will create a mobile hotspot from your Android Phone. In OI go to the network section at the top right of the screen and manually select the HTC network in this case. You may have to wait a few seconds for it to configure. A notification will show at the top of your screen to show you are connected to the 3 G network via your Android phone.
