Oracle and Opensolaris

This is the default desktop setup and below is my personal desktop take on this using Mashup icons, mac panels from www.gnome-look.org. The larger size icons are because I am partially sighted.

The lastest news from California is that Oracle has made a takeover bid for Sun Micro systems. Most pundits consider consolidation in the high tech sector was inevitable in a global down turn. However what is not clear who the right partner is for Sun. The disclosure that IBM was interested as a hostile bidder caused some dismay both at board level at Sun but also the large stakeholder groups Sun commands.Until the dust settles and a new strategy is formulated it is unclear as to where both these companies assets are to combine. Winners and loosers there will be but it is unlikely that a new strategy will be officially announced until September 2009. Remembering the recent merger of Compaq and Hewlett Packard what Oracle is determined to do is to make sure it will be quick and decisive.
It is also unclear as to the development of Opensolaris following the announcement that Oracle will integrate their products into Solaris. The most likely outcome for Opensolaris will be integrated into Oracles lineup as an Enterprise server, desktop, and laptop. But what is to become of the Opensource community? This is an outstanding question however whatever is decided a rethink will be made.

To a certain extent the development of Opensolaris is coming together very quickly and looks to be a good system but its yet to be fully leveraged in the market so far remaining an unknown with great potential.

Android tethering to Openindiana laptops

One major problem with using Opensolaris was the lack of drivers for mobile 3G modems However with the development of tethering on Android (Froyo 2.2 and above) Openindiana can now been used very easily with laptops on the 3G/4G networks. In Android go to settings, wireless networks, check the boxes marked tethering and mobile networks. This will create a mobile hotspot from your Android Phone. In OI go to the network section at the top right of the screen and manually select the HTC network in this case. You may have to wait a few seconds for it to configure. A notification will show at the top of your screen to show you are connected to the 3 G network via your Android phone.
